I often get the question – do dogs (or cats) develop diabetes? The answer is yes, and I had an opportunity to interview Finley (who didn’t have much to say) and his permanent foster “mom” Trudy last week at an English Springer spaniel dog show outside of Atlanta. While Finley has unfortunately already suffered vision loss as a result of poorly managed diabetes, you’ll see how Trudy has focused on the key diabetes management behaviors – diet, exercise, and medication – to bring Finley’s diabetes to a much better place. As an aside, a little after-the-fact research determined that Finley’s insulin – “Vetsulin” – is twice-per-day intermediate-acting insulin (peaks at 4 hours, sustains for up to 12 hours) similar to the NPH injections I used to take before insulin pumps were available. Let’s hear it for Finley and Trudy!
