Super Finds at the Farmer's Market

One of my favorite things to do during the summer and early fall is to visit Farmer’s Markets. Today was a perfect day with the sun shining brightly and the temperature in the mid 80’s.  I absolutely love vegetables and fresh vegetables even better yet. So, a farmer’s market for me is like a candy store to a young child.  There seems to be something new every time we go to a Farmer’s market and today we found an interesting sweet corn, called Marai, which is being harvested in a nearby suburb. They touted at the booth today that this corn is so fresh you can eat it straight off the cob without even cooking, and that it has lower starch content.  They handed out samples by just breaking off pieces of the cob.  And they were absolutely correct about the delicious taste and softness of the corn…. we truly were able to eat it without cooking it! Unfortunately they couldn’t answer the question on my mind….if the starch content is different than other corn, what is the carbohydrate content? Even though they did not have the answer at the booth, they directed me to their website where I did find indeed the carb content was only 19 grams for one ear of corn.

By the way the Farmer’s Market also had other wonderful produce, some very unique compared to what you can get at the chain grocery stores. There was purple and yellow cauliflower, thin asparagus, and white asparagus, green, orange and yellow tomatoes, radishes and beets and lots of berries, peaches, melons, and cherries. And the best thing, all brought in fresh from the farm that morning.
